What is Fill Up My Luggage?
Fill Up My Luggage (or FillUp) is an online crowdshipping community where travelers deliver shipments. It connects people who need to move goods worldwide with travelers who can carry and deliver them. The community consists of travelers, expats, commuters, NGOs and people who want to ship goods.
What does crowdshipping mean?
Crowdshipping is the practice of shipping products and/or goods by travelers. The idea is that someone who is already traveling from point A to B can carry a package along the way and drop it off.
Why should I use FillUp to ship goods?
Reduced shipping costs and timings are the other advantages of Crowdshipping. It can also give you access to products which regular carrier/courier services cannot ship to your country.
Shippers: How do I ship a package?
Step 1. Post your requests on FillUp. In your advertisement you describe what your package is and how you would like to reward the Traveler. This could be money, free accommodation, a city tour or something else.
Step 2. Get in touch with a Traveler and agree on the delivery terms, such as time, location and price.
Step 3. Receive the goods at the agreed location and give the Traveler the agreed reward.
Step 4. Write a review after receiving the shipment. By sharing your experiences with other members, you help build a safer and more reliable community.
How can I carry a package as traveler?
Simply create a free account and add your trip(s). Then Shippers can contact you and begin arranging for you to deliver their goods. Alternatively, you can browse the itineraries or use the “search” to find a Shipper on your route.
Can I trust the Traveler/Shipper?
We are developing various tools to safeguard the FillUp community, including:
A review system
After each delivery, the Traveler and the Shipper are asked to write a review about each other. This enables the Shipper and the Traveler to gather references from other members. The review system is an important way to build a trusted community.
The mobile phone of each member is verified through an authentication code. The Traveler and the Shipper will receive each other’s contacts details after both have accepted the shipment. Members also have the option to validate his/her profile. They can be done by providing a valid credit card, a copy of their ID/passport and connecting to an existing social media profile. Other members are then able to see that a member is validated and thus trustworthy.
Payment system: allowing to transfer money via Fill Up My Luggage
The Shipper and the Traveler may decide to use Fill Up My Luggage to transfer money. In this case the Shipper will deposit the money with Fill Up My Luggage. After a successful delivery the Traveler will receive the money.
Insurance for the packages
Like existing couriers, the Shippers can decide to insure their shipments. This service is provided for an additional cost.
How much does it cost to send a shipment?
FillUp does not charge anything for the service and is free for all. The cost of the shipment is entirely up to the Shipper and the Traveler. The Traveler could be rewarded with money, free accommodation, a city tour or something else. Generally, the Travelers mention in their advertisement what they prefer to receive as a reward for their service. Likewise, the Shippers describe how they would like to reward a Traveler. It is totally up to you to decide – and agree on – the appropriate reward/price.
To increase your chances of finding a Traveler, price your request at the highest value you would pay.
How should I pay the Traveler?
We are working on a payment system. The Shipper and the Traveler may decide to transfer money via Fill Up My Luggage. Meanwhile we recommend you pay the Traveler in cash, after delivery. If you want to pay the Traveler before delivery, use online wallets – like PayPal or Google Wallet – or your local bank to transfer the money.
Important: Do not share your credit card information with other members. We will never contact you to ask for your credit card information.
Why is Fill Up My Luggage free?
The main goal of FillUp is to help people around the world by getting the goods they need. To encourage as many travelers, expats, NGOs and locals to use our services we aim to keep our primary service free. Currently, FillUp depends on donations, fund raising projects and volunteering work to keep the website up and running and the services free of charge. We might introduce additional paid services in the future to cover operational costs, however, our intention is to keep things free for all!
What can I ship with FillUp?
Like UPS and FedEx, you can ship anything with FillUp as long as you comply with the local and – if applicable - international laws or regulations.
Consult the customs website of the country of origin and destination when shipping goods internationally and check if you are allowed to import and/or export the item(s) you plan to transport. Make sure that you are not violating any local or international laws or regulations. It is forbidden to use Fill Up My Luggage for transportation of weapons, drugs or any illegal material. Check the FillUp Terms and Conditions for a more detailed insight of the prohibited items.
Why should I inspect the contents of the packages?
Before carrying, you should always inspect the content of the package thoroughly. As a traveler you are responsible for your luggage. If you are not able to inspect the contents of the package for any reason, you must decline to transport the package. You assume the full risk for the transaction, including any legal consequences by transporting a package that has not been inspected.
- Open packages and validate the contents. Do not let the wrapping paper stop you from opening the packages.
- Check the warranty seal of the electronic devices has not been broken or damaged.
- Turn on the electronic devices to make sure that they have not been tampered with.
The Shipper will not allow me to open a package, what should I do?
As a traveler you are responsible for the content of your luggage and obliged to check the contents of the package in advance. If the Shipper does not permit you to open the package or if you are not able to inspect the contents for any reason, you must decline to transport the package. Even if you simply do not trust the Shipper or the content of the shipment, you are advised to walk away.
Why should I charge the electronic devices?
Some airports do not permit broken electronic devices as a security measure. Therefore, the electronic devices must be charged to check they can be turned on. This is necessary to make sure that they have not been tampered with. Do not forget to include the charger that belongs to the electronic device.
What should I do if there are problems while I am carrying a package?
Unfortunately, sometimes unexpected events and problems occur, which prevent the Traveler from delivering the package as expected. In that case you must notify the Shipper immediately. You should inform the Shipper about delays, damaged items or any other problem that might concern the Shipper. Bear in mind, failing to make the delivery and not resolving the issue with the Shipper might result in poor ratings on your profile.
